How is Typetone's AI-Generated Content Plagiarism-Free?

Still today, content creation reigns supreme. But, the issue of plagiarism looms large. With vast amounts of information available online, it’s easier than ever for unoriginal content to slip through the cracks. For businesses that want to maintain their integrity and brand voice (and their search engine rankings!), it’s a priority to make sure their content is plagiarism-free. This is where Typetone steps in, offering cutting-edge AI-generated content solutions that are not only innovative but also rigorously plagiarism-free.

Understanding the Risks: AI Detectors vs. Plagiarism Checkers

Not knowing the origin of your content is risky. While many new AI tools have sprung up to help professionals make their jobs easier, not all of them do a great job of generating original content.

That’s right: Many generative AI technologies still plagiarize large chunks of content. And if you publish it, that can get your business into trouble.

To address this issue, several AI detection resources have also popped up. These tools, alongside classic plagiarism checkers, are often touted as a solution that businesses can use to catch plagiarized content early. However, AI content detectors come with many issues. They can’t definitively catch AI-written content; they can only guess.

Plagiarism Checkers

A plagiarism checker is a tool that scans written content and compares it to a database of sources from the web to find four or more words repeated in the same order.

A sentence detected by a plagiarism checker.

The same sentence already published on the web in a different article.

A plagiarism checker can scan a document and show you where there were instances of strings of text that are exactly the same as a different source. They can also tell you what percentage of the document was plagiarized and which sources the plagiarism comes from.

A small percentage of plagiarism is normal and likely coincidental. But once a document is 15% plagiarized or higher, you could start to have problems.

For example, search engines hate duplicate content. If you publish plagiarism on your website, even if it’s self-plagiarism from something else you wrote, and even if you cite your source, your website can still get punished in its search rankings.

And that’s not even mentioning other problems with plagiarism: legal problems for stealing intellectual property, ethical problems for passing off someone’s work as your own, and reputation problems, as it can cause readers to lose trust in your business.

AI Detectors

AI detectors, as opposed to plagiarism checkers, analyze content with natural language processing techniques and advanced algorithms to determine the possibility that the document was written by generative AI.

Generative AI technology, in simple terms, usually uses percentages to “predict” what word will come next in any given sentence. If you write, “Once upon a…,” generative AI can analyze millions of articles, books, and more, to predict that the next word will be “time.”

Because generative AI uses a prediction model to write, AI checkers can use the same prediction model to tell if a text was written by AI.

In other words, these tools can look at each sentence or word and guess what an AI bot might write next. If the content matches with this guess, AI might have been involved in writing it.

Of course, this, too, comes with limitations.

Does AI Plagiarize?

Usually, content that triggers an AI content detector isn’t a problem. The problem arises when the AI technology steals tidbits from other sources that add up to a high percentage of plagiarism.

Remember, ChatGPT might have made generative AI much more famous, but there are thousands of other, more advanced examples of generative AI (some of which have been around since before ChatGPT). Some AI models, like TypeTone, are very intentional about not stealing directly from other sources. But ChatGPT, which tends to write in more general, “safe” ways, does often plagiarize chunks of text.

AI and people can both plagiarize, but they usually plagiarize differently. When a person plagiarizes, they might take chunks of text from a few different sources and combine them together. When AI software plagiarizes, it typically takes little snippets from many different sources, but when all of those “little snippets” add up, the document could show up as 10% plagiarized or more, especially in shorter pieces of content.

For example, the article in the example above was about yoga poses for pelvic floor health. When we asked ChatGPT-3 to write the same article, it used more than twelve sources to produce an article that was, in the end, more than 40% plagiarized. If a business or student had published this article without first revising it, then they could have faced academic, financial, or even legal consequences for stealing intellectual property.

The text in the document above was copied directly from ChatGPT. The parts that are underlined in green are plagiarized. On the right, you can see that the plagiarized portions came from many different sources, but in the bottom right corner, you can see that all of those different instances of plagiarism add up an article that is 40% plagiarized.

Our opinion is that the best approach is always using a plagiarism checker, and if you want to use an AI-checker, remember to always take the results with a grain of salt.
